I KNOW THE RULES!!! They have been ingrained in my head from day one:
1) NO white after Labor day (there are exceptions like weddings, and winter white)
2) NO seersucker after Labor day
3)NO summer shifts, linen, etc
However, it is very hard when the day after Labor day the temperature is 93 degrees. It is still damn hot, especially on the playground, and during carpool duty.
The Etiquette Grrls, (check out their website) have a few helpful suggestions like a brown cotton sleeveless dress (for school all clothes must have sleeves). But come on. I understand the rules, but I don't like them. I would like to proprose that summer wear should be "allowed" until Halloween or at least some date in mid-October. It is too damn hot, (we are going to the beach next weekend and I know we will have plenty of beach time), blame it on global warming, or something. The rules have loosed depending on where you live, and summer wear is "allowed" starting on Easter day.
I want to start a movement, summer wear allowed untill Halloween! Anyone in or have a helpful comment or solution?
4 Interesting thoughts:
I definitely will not wear white shoes after Labor Day, but I don't like white shoes in general. The majority of my Lilly prints will stay in my closet until Spring. Even though I live in FL, I don't like to look like a tourist.
I still will be wearing lightweight clothing because it is a necessity down here! The cut of the dress doesn't mater so much to me-- sleeveless is okay.
And I get to wear all of my sandals (like Bonannos and such) all year long (just no white)! Yay!
Hi Becs. I am with you 100%. I think your point is just a broadening of the old "white wine with fish red wine with beef" problem. An old cajun chef I adore, Justin Wilson, once said "now you just drink whatever it is you wanna drink with your food that makes ya happy, you". I follow his lead. Go for the white linen until its too cold to wear it if it makes you happy!!!
PS. The Irish Redhead has a MUCH more strict view of all this...absolutely NO white post L.D. Even down here in the Southern broiler...

I'm with you on the extending the warm weather wear rules for those of us still dealing with 90 degree plus temps.
I do try to stay within the traditional guidelines, but on certain days - like yesterday, when I was at an outdoor music festival, in 90 plus degree weather, surrounded by hippies - the white linen shirt came out. In my defense, I also wore pearls!
